Hurricane Preparations
Last year the CLMHOA established an emergency response organization
and process to ensure that we would take appropriate steps to protect
our residents and property. Members of our emergency response
organization met this past week to confirm that we all understand our
responsibilities.
Additionally, Mike Gordon, Chair of the Security/Safety Committee,
and I met with the Beaufort County Manager to discuss County plans for
hurricane preparations/response and the integration of Cypress Landing
into those plans. Because of the size of our community, the County
Manager has agreed to treat us as a municipality and directly
communicate with us once the County activates its emergency response
organization in preparation for a major storm.
Other highlights from that meeting are:
1. The County will not mandate an evacuation for our portion of
Beaufort County unless a Category 4 hurricane is predicted. We will
receive a mandatory evacuation notice approximately 72 hours before the
storm reaches the county. Highways 33, 17, and 264 will be designated
evacuation routes.
2. Because of the heavily treed nature of our community, the County
Manager suggested that CLMHOA consider an evacuation if a Category 3
hurricane is predicted. High winds are the greatest risk to this
community – not high water.
3. The evacuation center serving Cypress Landing will be Southside
High School.
However, residents are encouraged to make plans to evacuate the
county locations well removed from the path of any hurricane.
4. Remember to make plans for your pets if you are going to evacuate
the region. No emergency response vehicles will be dispatched if
sustained winds of 50 miles per hour are encountered.
5. Once an evacuation is recommended and individual residents make a
decision to remain in their homes, those residents must be prepared to
be self- sufficient for up to 12 days – no electricity, no water, no
propane, no access to grocery stores, and, possibly, no access to
medical facilities.
6. If a resident has special needs or may require special assistance
before, during or after a storm event, please contact our Community
Manager (975-3255) so that our emergency organization can follow-up as
we prepare for the storm.
7. Attached is some additional Safety Information for your
consideration.
