Chairman, Bill Cook, called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
Present: Bill Cook, Sue Hendrick, Bob Moore, Barbara Pelletier,
Reg Smith, Lyle Carlson, Gene Jaeger and Kathy Tuley.
Absent: Vivienne Afshari, Grace Gandt, Dot Rentschler, Jim Rudbeck,
Fred Lavin, Jay Butler, Tom Madson, HOA Liaison and Scott Fagin, Finance
Board Liaison.
A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes from April
16, 2008.
SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS:
New Members and Clinics- Lyle Carlson
Bill has discontinued the professional lessons with Dale Peele due to
lack of interest among the players.
Lyle reports that participation in his beginner’s clinics has been very
good during the past 4 weeks. Jay and Bill have helped at
all of the sessions thus far. Lyle will be available for lessons
on May 13 and 20 but will need a substitute for May 27 and June 3.
He will send out an e-mail to solicit help if needed.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance- Jay Butler
The top dressing has not been put down on the courts. A work party
will be convened soon to spread the dressing. The screens have
been lowered and fixed. Sue did not have the materials for
repairing the net on Court 1. Bill sewed up the holes in the net.
We will continue to check to see if the stitching will hold up.
New nets cost about $125-150 and may have to be replaced in the future.
Reg thinks that courts 1 and 2 may need more top dressing around the
lines and serving area. A drop spreader would be helpful and Jim
has one we might use.
Grace has purchased a new umbrella and has completed work on a new
flower pot for the courts. She has organized a group of players to
work on replacing the flowers in the boxes at the courts.
The committee reviewed Bob’s tips for cleaning the courts. Using
these hints should help prevent too much top dressing from accumulating
in certain areas.
Lack of shade at the courts was discussed. Bill Hendrick’s plan
for constructing a structure next year was discussed. Bill
suggested putting $700 in next year’s budget for this purpose.
Social Activities and Member Tournaments- Grace Gandt
The social events for the year are continuing with our next tournament
scheduled for May 19 in the evening. Barb will send out a reminder
to contact Vivienne and Dot to sign up.
Inter-Club Tennis Matches- Fred Lavin
Reg reports that we presently have no matches scheduled with other
clubs. Two matches were cancelled because we could not enlist
enough women players. It has been difficult getting enough players to
sign up. Reg expressed frustration with scheduling these events.
Kathy Tuley tells us that Washington is willing to play but they are
busy with their league play.
The committee discussed the need to have one person in charge of these
matches. Responsibility for all aspects of each match must be
assigned to one person. To facilitate getting players, the
committee discussed holding events during the week as well as at night.
All agreed it is also important to check with the golf club and yacht
club for scheduling purposes since people have so many commitments.
Kathy has agreed to continue to work with Washington and Bill and Reg
will try to recruit help with the other interclub matches.
.
Budget and Finance- Jim Rudbeck
Jim is away but will submit a 2009 tennis budget forecast.
New/Old Business-
Lyle has purchased a container to be placed at the courts for used
balls.
The next Tennis Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11,
2008 in the Washington Room of the Bay Club.
The meeting was adjourned by Chairman, Bill Cook, at 5:05 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Pelletier
