The Environmental Committee continues working to make a positive impact
on the natural world that encompasses Cypress Landing.
12 additional new arboretum grade botanical identification signs have
been installed along the nature trail off club house road. If you’ve not
walked the trail, do your self a favor and try it. Just watch for
wild life and wear appropriate clothing.
The NC Cooperative Extension agency in Beaufort County graduated 32 new
Master Gardeners in last winter’s class… 17 of which live in Cypress
Landing. Six of the total are Environmental committee members.
The first annual Bird watching and identification program was held this
passed spring. Curtis Dystra from Goose Creek State park provided the
scintillating program and the participants were all on bicycles.
The Washington Blind Center continues to receive approximately 1/3 of
its total activity funding from our aluminum can recycling program.
The collection receptacles are down at the marina in the stockade fenced
area. We remind everyone that recycling aluminum cans makes a
difference in someone’s life, every day.
The Committee conducts bimonthly Chocowinity Bay water testing in
conjunction with the ECU division Citizens Water Monitoring Program. We
test for salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, clarity and
several other health indicators. The program is coordinated by David
Nelson.
Bob Wright, committee coordinator for the Adopt A Highway program
announced and displayed, a North Carolina Highway Department 10 Year
Plaque recognizing the extended period of uninterrupted monitoring and
policing service on Blounts Creek Road.
